We finally got a chance to start refinishing our bedroom furniture. This furniture was my Grandpa's from around the 1930's. It was passed on to me and I have always wanted to refinish it and restain the wood to a lighter color. The pieces are a very dark brown and we feel that the detailed carvings get lost in such a dark color. We are fortunate enough that my husbands's parents have a garage for us to work in and lucky to get some advice from his father about the best way to go about the whole process.
After working on it all weekend and a little on Tuesday night we realized what a long process it is! We had to put at least eight layers of stripper on to scrape all the stain off. We also learned that steel wool works great to get the stain off after scrapping. We also have to fill any chipped areas with wood putty and sand it down before we can restain it. It is a lot of work especially if we do not have a lot of time as it is but we feel the result will be worth it and we hope to keep it in good condition so we can pass it along to our children one day.
